How to sew a button (Basic Mending)

TL;DR: Thread needle, anchor knot, X-pattern (4 holes) or loops (2 holes), create shank, tie off.

A loose button shouldn't retire a shirt. This is a 5-minute skill that saves clothes. You don't need a machine; just a needle, thread, and scissors. It is the most useful fashion skill you will ever learn.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Thread the Needle: Cut 12 inches of thread. Thread the needle and pull it through until ends meet. Tie a knot at the end of the double strand.
  2. Anchor the Thread: Start from the BACK of the fabric where the button goes. Push needle up. This hides the knot on the inside.
  3. The Pattern: Thread through the button hole. Go down through the opposite hole. Repeat 4-5 times. For 4-hole buttons, create an 'X' or two parallel lines.
  4. Create the Shank: On the last pass, come up through the fabric but NOT through the button. Wrap the thread tightly around the 'stem' of threads under the button 3 times. This gives the button room to button.

FAQ

What thread do I use?

Polyester all-purpose. Try to match the color, or use black/white if neutral.

The button is too tight!

You forgot the 'Shank' step. Place a toothpick on top of the button while sewing to keep it loose.

2 holes or 4 holes?

Match the other buttons on the shirt.
